EDITORIAL
THE JOURNAL OF THE SOVIET ARMY is a monthly Internet journal devoted to orders of battle of the Soviet Army 1917-92. In this journal we provide orders of battles of Soviet Army campaigns and battles, and unit histories from the Soviet period. Much of this material is from Russian archives and formerly classified Soviet published material. We will, from time to time, also provide analyses of Soviet Army organizational structure, tactics, doctrine and theory.
We welcome Mr. Alan Wilson's Kursk 1943 page to the History
at Orbat.com family. We will publish the page; editorial control vests
solely with Mr. Wilson. In an exciting development, Mr. Wilson and a group of his
like-minded friends have provided to History at Orbat.com approximately 10
Gigabytes [10,000 Megabytes] of material on the Soviet Army. While we appreciate the eagerness of readers wanting
immediate access to this trove of material, there are several issues that need
to be worked out. Chief among these is the question of deciding on charges
for access. Because of the huge costs of maintaining this archive on line, we
have to offset the expense in some manner. If any JSA reader is willing to write
up a grant proposal that will permit conditional free access to the archive,
please contact the Publisher, Ravi Rikhye. Armies of the Bear Series In our twelfth issue, we continue the series as part of
the magazine. ARMIES OF THE BEAR: The histories of the formations of
the armed forces of the USSR, 1917-1992, Volume 1: Rifle, Guards Rifle,
Mountain Rifle, Motorized Rifle, Airborne and People’s Militia Divisions of the
USSR, 1917-1992.

This month’s issue provides the 57th through 62nd Rifle Divisions. Aviation Regiments Series The Aviation Regiments Series (which
requires a separate subscription) details the Aviation formations that were
part of the Active Army (those units on an active combat front) for the Second
World War. For the fight against the European Axis nations, this was 22 June
1941 to 11 May 1945 and for the Japanese, 9 August 1945 to 3 September 1945. I
have included as a free sample the first page of the Aviation Regiments of the
Air Force and Air Defense Forces. We are now up to the 1008th Regiment [40 pages total]. The reason for the
separate subscription is the cost involved for labor from our Russian
contributor, who has to hand-copy the material.

This project aims to publish detailed histories of every
Division ever created as Part of the Armed Forces of the USSR and the NKVD/MVD/KGB
from 1918 through 1991, using material directly from the Russian Archives. Phase I, the identification of every Division ever formed (your editor
estimates 1,500 to 2,000 Divisions), is complete. Phase II, preparing a cost estimate and making a grant proposal, is also
complete. See below.
Update June 2004 We submitted a proposal to a research center
that deals with the post-Word War 2 period for conducting research on unit
histories of the Soviet armed forces. The funding has been approved, but
the funding schedule will depend on the center raising money. We hope to get
underway by Fall, 2004. If you would like to
contribute material for consideration, please send it to me at
Craig Crofoot.
